Prayers to the Holy Spirit (2) [down to page content] [text links][image links]

Come, Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, send down

[flag: en]

Come, Holy Spirit,
send down from heaven
beams of your light.

Come, Father of the poor,
come, giver of gifts [1],
come, light of the world.

Perfect comforter,
sweet guest of the soul,
sweet coolness.

You are like rest in the work,
like refreshment in the heat,
like comfort in tears.

O best light,
fill the innermost hearts
of your Faithful.

Without you [2]
humans would be worthless and empty,
nothing would be harmless.

Clean what is dirty,
water what has dried out,
and heal what is hurt.

Soften what is hard,
heaten what is cold,
lead what got lost.

Give to your faithful,
who trust in you,
the holy sevenfold gift [3].

Give merit for our virtue,
give a healthy end,
give eternal joy.

Amen. Alleluia.

(Stephen Langton, c. 1160-1228)

[1] In the first letter to the Corinthians (12:8-10;28), Pauls mentions as gifts of the spirit: the office to be an apostle, prophetic speaking, the speaking of wisdom, the speaking of knowledge, faith, healing, doing wonders, speaking in tongues, interpreting what is spoken in tongues, helping...

[2] Literally:
"Without your name
there is nothing in human[kind],
nothing is harmless."

[3] Greek and Roman philosophers spoke about four Cardinal Virtues: prudentia (Prudence, Wisdom), temperantia (self-control), fortitudo (strength, courage) and iustitia (justice). The Christian theologians of the early Middle Ages added fides (faith), caritas (love) and spes (hope).

Komm, Heiliger Geist, sende

[flag: de]

Komm, Heiliger Geist,
sende vom Himmel
Strahlen deines Lichtes.

O bestes Licht,
fülle die innersten Herzen
deiner Gläubigen.

Ohne dich [2]
wären Menschen bedeutungslos und leer,
nichts wäre harmlos.

Reinige das Schmutzige,
wässere das Ausgetrocknete,
heile das Verletzte.

Weiche das Verhärtete auf,
erwärme das Erkaltete,
leite das Verirrte.

Gib deinen Gläubigen,
die auf dich vertrauen,
die heilige siebenfache Gabe [3].

Gib die verdiente Belohnung für unser Bemühem,
gib ein gesundes Ende,
gib ewige Freuden.

Amen. Alleluja.

(Stephen Langton, ca. 1160-1228)

Veni, Sancte Spiritus, et emitte

[flag: la]

Veni, Sancte Spiritus,
et emitte coelitus,
lucis tuae radium.

Veni, pater paupernum,
veni, dator munerum,
veni, lumen cordium.

Consolator optime,
dulcis hospes animae,
dulce refrigerium.

In labore requies,
in aestu temperies,
in fletu solatium.

O lux beatissima
reple cordis intima
tuorum fidelium.

Sine tuo nomine,
nihil est in homine,
nihil est innoxium.

Lava quod est sordidum,
riga quod est aridum,
sana quod est saucium.

Flecte quod est rigidum,
fove quod est frigidum,
rege quod est devium.

Da tuis fidelibus,
in te confidentibus,
sacrum septenarium.

Da virtutis meritum,
da salutis exitum,
da perenne gaudium.

Amen. Alleluia.

(Stephen Langton, circa 1160-1228)
